PA Athletic Training Law
The Medical Practice Act & The Osteopathic Medical Practice Act. These Laws grant Athletic Trainers the ability to practice athletic training in PA and establish the definitions for athletic trainers (Section 51.1 Medical Practice Act and Section 7.1 Osteopathic Medical Practice Act).

PA Athletic Training Rules and Regulations
State Board of Medicine and the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine Rules and Regulations.
The PA Code; Title 49: Professional and Vocational Standards – Part I; Subpart A provides for the Athletic Training Rules and Regulations: “to provide for the licensure and practice standards of athletic trainers”. The State Board of Medicine is Chapter 18; Subchapter H and the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine is Chapter 25; Subchapter M
Apply or Renew a License : *** In PA you can be licensed under EITHER the SBOM or SBOOM and be supervised by either a DO or MD: you do NOT need to be licensed under both boards

License renewal is at the end of every even year (Dec 2024, Dec 2026 etc.)

There is no grace period for non-renewal and you will be subject to a fine if your renewal is lapsed (dependent on length of time practicing without an active license).

The state will only send messages about renewal to the information that they have on file: if your information changes (email address/physical address) you MUST update your information with the state to get the reminder

State Board of Medicine (SBOM): Biennial renewal fee $37

State Board of Osteopathic Medicine (SBOOM): Biennial renewal fee $75
